Looking for the best places to take a ghost tour?
If you love learning about the local history of destinations that you visit, then a ghost tour is a great way to get to know a place.
I’ve even taken ghost tours near my hometown and learned new stories I had never heard before!
The real reason I love to do ghost tours though is that so many destinations that we visit don’t really have much to do after dinner time.
All the museums and attractions close, but I still want to be out and about and explore.
Ghost tours are the perfect evening activity to walk around and explore a new place.

Best Ghost Tour Destinations In The US
We’ve done ghost tours all over the US and these are our favorite tours we’ve ever done!
1. Williamsburg, Virginia
We’ve actually done 2 ghost tours in Williamsburg and there’s some pros and cons to each one.
Williamsburg is a huge spot for ghost tours, so you’ll likely be with a large group regardless of which option you choose.
The highlight of these tours are that there is a house in Colonial Williamsburg that is one of the most haunted houses in the US.
It has recently been ranked the #6 most haunted house on the East Coast and the #1 most haunted house in Virginia.
Haunted Williamsburg is the official tour through Colonial Williamsburg where the tour guides are dressed as period actors and these are the only tours that take you inside the buildings.
This tour is relatively more family friendly depending on how well your kids can tolerate ghost stories.
In general, ghost tours aren’t really recommended for young kids though.
But middle school age and up should be fine.

Colonial Ghosts is another tour in Colonial Williamsburg from a 3rd party company that covers a mix of Colonial Williamsburg and the buildings just outside the park limits.
With this ghost tour you can rent an EMF reader to find paranormal activity and you can add on an additional half hour for even more ghost stories (usually darker, less family friendly stories).

2. Los Angeles, California
I lived in Southern California for 8 years and never once went to LA’s Chinatown until I did this ghost tour.
It is a beautiful area, especially when it’s lit up at night.
The best part is that everyone gets an EMF reader to be on the lookout for paranormal activity.
The guide also uses dowsing rods and a spirit box to talk to spirits that are present during the tour.
It really has everything you would want and expect on a ghost tour.
You can also enjoy a local bar in Chinatown after the tour is over if you’re not quite ready to go home.
This area felt completely safe, especially because we were in a group, and because it’s well lit.

3. Virginia Beach, Virginia
Honestly our first impression of Virginia Beach itself was not great.
It seemed just dirty and old, but after a few days we were able to find some cool things to do.
Virginia Beach is a very under-rated ghost tour destination.
It’s along a part of the east coast known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic”, so there are ghost stories spanning centuries here.
What I loved about our tour the most is that you just walk down the oceanfront boardwalk and stop at different landmarks along the way.
We had EMF readers for this tour and they would go off like crazy at so many spots!
The ghosts seemed to love experiencing the tour with us.
We also added on the extended 30 minute tour at the end with even more (darker) dark stories.
On a recent road trip we did ghost tours in 4 different cities and this tour was our favorite.
We got lucky with a cool tour guide that loves doing ghost tours on the side and is very knowledgeable about the history of the area.

4. Cincinnati, Ohio
Most people don’t find themselves in Cincinnati because they’re on vacation.
You’re probably here to visit family or watch a professional sporting event.
So if you’re looking for a night time activity in town and to learn a little bit about the area, this tour is perfect.
It’s in a very popular location near downtown that has plenty of restaurants and bars you can enjoy before or after your tour.
I learned stories about the Cincinnati area that I had never heard before and I grew up in Dayton, Ohio only about an hour away.
Did you know we have some memorabilia for Abraham Lincoln’s funeral procession that someone stole off of his casket?
Did you know the park across the street was built on top of an ancient burial ground and people’s pets are still digging up bones every once in awhile?

5. Washington, DC
A city as old as DC with as much history that has taken place here is bound to have some ghost stories.
What I love about this ghost tour is that it starts near the White House and encircles most of the historic sites on the front side of the White House.
So you can factor that in to your sightseeing schedule and avoid going places multiple times.
Many ghost stories have to do with presidents and their families, but definitely not all of them.
The architecture of the buildings in this area just look like these places would have some spooky things going on.
This is another tour where you can rent an EMF reader to search for paranormal activity and add-on an additional 30 minutes for even darker ghost stories.
Our tour guide also offered to take photos for people when we were at bigger landmarks like the White House.

Conclusion: Best Ghost Tour Destinations In The US
I’d like to add some honorable mentions that are some obvious ghost tour destinations you should try to visit too.
These are Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and New Orleans, Louisiana.
When we were on some of these ghost tours, these destinations were mentioned by several guests as being their favorites for ghost tours.
We’ve been to both but haven’t done ghost tours there yet, but it’s definitely on our list.
